Rats (Rattus Norvegicus)

The most common of the rat species in England is the Brown Rat (Rattus Norvegicus), and they can be found in every major town and city – it is believed that there are currently 15 million brown rats in the UK alone and the numbers are rising quickly.

Rats are most commonly found in covered, warm locations with plentiful food sources nearby – rats will eat anything. They are most often found in sewers, buildings, and houses, as these meet all of their preferred requirements.

If left untreated, rats can cause significant damage to buildings – from burrowing to chewing through wires, and more. Proficient climbers, rats are able to scale buildings and reach far and wide – spreading damage.

House Mice (Mus Domesticus)

Mice are most commonly found during the autumn and winter months, when they are looking for a warm, safe place to nest for the colder months. Mice are capable of reproducing very quickly, having anywhere between 3-10 litters per year. This means that a small problem can become a big problem very quickly!

With small, malleable skeletons, mice are able to get into a variety of places through the smallest of openings, meaning that they are able to get into your home or premises easily and without being detected.

Common Wasps (Vespula Vulgaris, Vespula Germanica)

Often found nesting in trees, loft spaces, cavities and voids, wasps are notorious for building their nests where people like to gather. Often this is because there is ample food supply, as adult wasps are attracted to food, sweet drinks, bins, and skips.

Wasps are often mistaken for bees and other flying stinging insects, however, it is paramount that they are identified and removed quickly and safely. Wasp stings are painful and can be life-threatening to those with wasp allergies. Their nests can also cause significant damage to homes and buildings if left untreated.

Cockroaches (Blattella Germanica)

The cockroach most commonly found in the UK is the German Cockroach (Blattella Germanica). German cockroaches prefer wet and humid conditions and are typically found in bathrooms and kitchens.

German cockroaches are notorious for their ability to reproduce extremely quickly, a female can produce between 4-6 egg cases in her lifetime, each of which hold between 30 to 40 eggs. It takes just 1-2 days for them to hatch, and in their short 100-200 days lifespan, they can produce and astounding 240 offspring.

Fleas

The most common fleas in the UK are the cat flea, dog flea and bird flea. Fleas are parasites who live on other creatures and suck their blood, although wingless they are proficient jumpers and can jump as high as 8 inches.

Although fleas most commonly live on animals, they can also live within carpets and soft furnishings. Their jumping ability means they are able to jump from animals and furnishings on to humans, where they bite and jump off again.

When biting fleas inject a tiny amount of anaesthetic, so the bites aren’t usually felt. However, the bites do leave visible marks in straight lines and clusters. Once the anaesthesia has worn off the bites can be uncomfortable and itchy and are often mistaken for mosquito bites.

Grey Squirrels

Typically grey squirrels will be most active during autumn when they are collecting nuts and storing them in caches or scattered hiding places, and building their nests or the winter. When in woodland this tends to be in trees and hollowed out trunks. However, in more built up areas they are happy anywhere that is warm, dry, and away from predators – making lofts and chimneys the perfect location.

Squirrels are known to chew and gnaw wooden, plastic, metal and electrical wires, meaning they can do significant structural damage if they are in your loft – from gnawing through beams to even causing fires by damaging electrical wires. If you suspect a squirrel infestation, then it is prudent to act quickly and with caution.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are parasites, and they are on the increase in the UK. Bed bugs can be carried and spread in a manner of ways, through furniture, antiques, and even by person to person. With the ability to reproduce quickly, two bed bugs can quickly become hundreds and a serious infestation can take hold of your premises or home.

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to treat, and aren’t just found in unclean and dirty environments – unlike the commonly held belief. They can thrive in clean bedding, and are of particular nuisance to hotels and travellers – which also enables them to spread further afield.

Adept at hiding, bed bugs can find refuge in cracks, picture frames, behind wallpaper, and skirting boards, and will only emerge when they need to feed which is generally during the night. Due to this it often not sufficient enough to throw away furniture, as they will have infiltrated the very building itself.
